This course provides knowledge on nutrition including the energy-yielding nutrients (carbohydrates, lipids and proteins), micronutrients (vitamins and minerals), their absorption and metabolism. Physiological requirements of macro- and micronutrients are discussed as determinants of health and diseases in human populations. Students will critically research the association between diet and chronic diseases. The course presents current evidence for the role of diet in the prevention of chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, etc. The course also includes consideration of the nutritional requirements of a healthy human throughout the life stages. A special focus is put on the critical discussions of some current issues and topics in nutrition. The course also provide basic introduction to nutrigenomics and personalized nutrition for health promotion and disease prevention.
